Mental preparation tips to achieve your sporting goal

Staying focused on your sporting goal, without giving it up, is largely (even above all) a matter of the mind. This is the conviction of Anouk Garnier, coach, athlete, and author of the new Next Level Online Training Program. The professional gives us the keys to shaping a warrior's state of mind.

Take part in a race, or competition, lose weight, take a multi-day trip, build muscle... When you set a personal goal, mental preparation is as important as physical preparation. How do we find the goal that suits us and succeed in reaching it without hesitation? Anouk Garnier, fitness instructor of 10 years, and author of the new online training program Next Level gives us the keys to fitness and becoming "unstoppable" (the person you just can't stop).

Find your goal

A corner of sports motivation, and the goal is not the result of chance. It should be precise and answer the basic questions: "What do we really want?" "Why do we want to achieve this goal?" For example, if you want to take part in your first triathlon or do an Ironman (even though you've never raced), you take the time above all else to ask yourself your underlying causes. "It's a very personal approach that responds to our vision, our values, of something powerful," explains Anouk Garnier. The purpose of asking these questions? “It is the goal that will drive us and that we will rely on once we have a drop in speed or motivation.”

Set your limits

Our brain knows how to be very creative when it comes to finding reasons to put our sneakers in the locker or to distract us from our goal. And I was immediately given false thoughts and beliefs creeping in like “I don't squat because it hurts my knees; I don't go out for a run, it's raining; ingrained in us and that keeps us in our comfort zone.

Anouk anti-apology marches:

tell yourself that you are the only master of your actions by thinking for example: "If I delay my training, it will take me longer to reach my goal."

Don't give yourself time to think. We go for it and don't wait for our lighthearted (often negative) voice and emotions to take over into action.

Get organized

We practice daily self-discipline with the help of a weekly schedule. By setting a framework, it is easier to make the right choices on a daily basis. “So if we schedule a session and we get tired, we go anyway, even if it means session conditioning.”

Anouk's advice:

Do not hesitate to ask a professional who will help us organize ourselves daily and make a schedule. For example, in the course of losing weight, you can seek advice from a dietitian, or for a goal in the gym,

It is done step by step and in action

In the same way that a child does not learn to walk in a day, we allow ourselves time to reach our goal step by step. Don't make it to a 5K, half marathon, or job interview without preparing beforehand. These efforts will certainly require some sacrifices and work, especially if it's a big goal, but the game is well worth the effort, our expert assures. "If we are sure that we have done everything possible to achieve our goal, we will be better equipped psychologically and have more self-confidence on D-Day."

Dealing with frustrations and linking them to failure

It took us two months to reach our goal, and it ended up being a bitter failure. We tend to give up… “We must realize that it is these failures that keep us moving forward,” and this makes the mathematical relativist invites us to show kindness to ourselves and use perseverance. "We give ourselves time." When you think you failed at something, "we take advantage" without being dramatic and the next day "we evaluate and focus on what worked despite everything and on what needs improvement." By emphasizing the positives and our successes we are progressing.

believe in yourself

Before failure itself, it is often the fear of facing it that stands before us like an insurmountable mental fortress. The Coué Method is our ally in not giving up. "If you set yourself a goal, you believe in yourself 100% and repeat to yourself like a mantra that you are capable of anything. You leave yourself no other choice but to get there."
